Women’s Self Defense

Monday & Wednesdays @ 5pm

Brazilian (Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes techniques that allow a smaller person to control and subdue a larger opponent. Most women have taken some sort of self defense class where you have learned striking, groin kicking and trying to run away. While striking techniques can be effective in self-defense, relying solely on them might not be the best approach.

In a high-stress situation, adrenaline can cloud judgment, and precision in striking may be challenging to maintain. The emphasis on ground fighting is especially beneficial for women, as many confrontations end up on the ground.

What will you learn?

  1. Distance Management: Learning to maintain a safe distance and create space is crucial. Techniques involve using footwork and body positioning to avoid potential threats.

  2. Clinch and Control: BJJ emphasizes clinch work to control an opponent. Techniques include grips, pummeling, and establishing a dominant position to avoid strikes.

  3. Escapes from Holds: Women learn how to escape from common holds and grabs, such as wrist grabs, hair grabs, and bear hugs. Techniques focus on leverage and proper body mechanics.

  4. Ground Defense: Since many altercations end up on the ground, BJJ teaches women how to defend themselves in various positions. This includes escaping from the mount (when someone is on-top of you), side control (pinning you down from the side) and controlling you from your back.

  5. Submission Holds: Allows a women to force an attacker to submit to them by causing the attacker pain or discomfort or by putting them in a position where the risk of injury is imminent.

  6. Verbal Self-Defense: Communication is a key aspect of self-defense. Women are taught to use assertive verbal cues to deter potential attackers and seek help from bystanders.

  7. Situational Awareness: Our self-defense classes often include discussions on situational awareness, teaching women to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations.

  8. Live Sparring: Practical application is crucial. When ready, women are encouraged to engage in controlled sparring sessions and/or surprise attack scenarios, allowing them to test and refine their techniques in a realistic, dynamic setting.

The overall goal is to empower women with the skills and confidence to defend themselves effectively in various situations. The number one rule at our academy is to TAKE CARE OF YOUR TRAINING PARTNER. This means all women joining our class are treated with mutual respect and are expected to be flexible and patient with each other as we learn to be comfortable to uncomfortable, sensitive and triggering positions.
